This listing features a pair of Tokoname-ware yunomi tea cups, crafted approximately 20 years ago by the Unzen Gama kiln. These cups are wheel-thrown and showcase the traditional neriage technique—a method in which clays of contrasting colors are combined to create a marbled effect during the throwing process. In this set, multiple clay colors have been layered and incised with vertical grooves, revealing striking circular patterns beneath the surface.

The interior of each cup is finished in white, and both bear the kiln’s stamp near their base. The cups are accompanied by their original signed wooden storage box, adding to their value and authenticity.

Unzen Gama is a respected kiln located in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, known for producing high-quality teaware. Their work includes red shudoro pieces, neriage marbled clay, slipware, and unglazed mogake pieces—which are wrapped in seaweed before firing to create unique surface effects. The pottery is primarily thrown using a ke rokuro kick wheel, and their incised designs are carefully hand-carved by a small team of skilled artisans. They also produce kyusu (teapots) and yuzamashi (water cooling vessels) using slip molds.

Tokoname-ware has been produced for over a millennium in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture. Traditionally used for religious objects and tea utensils, Tokoname pottery is now especially recognized for its distinctive use of red clay and high-quality craftsmanship.
