This bamboo scoop has been carefully carved from a single piece of high-quality Japanese white bamboo (Shirodake) and has a standardized size to measure the ideal amount of Matcha powder. Suitable for everyday use as well as for tea ceremonies and practice in the Way of Tea (Okeiko). Made from local bamboo from Takayama (Nara), where the finest Matcha whisks are also produced.

CHASHAKU 茶杓

Chashaku (茶杓) are narrow, thin tea scoops used to scoop Matcha powder from a container and then stylishly place it into a Chawan tea bowl. The original Chashaku, which were imported from China to Japan, were made of ivory. Nowadays, they are carved from a single piece of bamboo or wood and typically have a knot in the middle. Traditionally, tea masters would carve their own bamboo Chashaku along with a matching storage tube and give it a poetic name known as Mei (銘). The Chashaku are sized to measure the exact amount of Matcha: For a normal, thin Usucha tea, 1.5 to 2 scoops per Chawan are used. For thicker Koicha tea (which is almost exclusively served in ceremonial contexts), up to 6 scoops can be used.
